Toronto FC complete wild 3-2 comeback vs. Colorado Rapids behind Josh Sargent's 1st MLS goal, atrocious Zack Steffen own goal
In MLS, a win’s a win — no matter how you get there. On Saturday, Toronto FC completed a wild comeback over the Colorado Rapids in a game that might be in the running for the weirdest MLS game this season.
In a matchup that had three red cards, Toronto scored three unanswered goals in the final 25 minutes to get the 3-2 win. An absolutely disastrous own goal from Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen gave Toronto the equalizer, before USMNT forward Josh Sargent scored his first MLS goal to notch the victory.
The first red came in the 34th minute, after a rough tackle from Rapids defender Jackson Travis on Toronto’s Raheem Edwards. Travis was initially given a yellow, but it was upgraded to a red after VAR review.
Then, soon after halftime, it was Edwards’ turn to get sent off, after the forward was given a red for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Colorado was given a free kick just outside of the box as a result of the foul, with Paxten Aaronson sending it all the way in for the Rapids’ first goal.
Only three minutes later, Keegan Rosenberry slammed in a goal off the rebound to double Colorado’s lead.
Toronto didn’t give up: In the 65th minute, Richie Layera brought the team within one after a floater that slipped past Steffen in goal.
With the teams already at 10-on-10, Colorado’s Miguel Navarro was then sent off in the 74th minute after fouling Layera outside the box and picking up his second yellow. Toronto used the man advantage to pick up an unusual equalizer — specifically, an own goal from Steffen that was so bad that the official MLS account refused to post it.
That brings us to the 85th minute, when Josh Sargent hit his first MLS goal since joining Toronto for a record fee in February, securing the game-winner off a corner kick.
Colorado now becomes the second club to pick up three red cards so far this season, joining the Houston Dynamo, who picked up reds in three straight games last month. Toronto now has two red cards, one of three teams with that tally.
